First Day Hikes are held each year on Jan. 1 in state parks throughout the nation as a way for people to get their new year started with a healthy hike and to promote exploration of state parks. Lake Pueblo State Park has hosted the First Day Hike for the past three years. “The whole idea is to promote the outdoors and to getting a healthy start to the new year on the first day,” said Amanda Cesar, a park ranger at Lake Pueblo. Cesar said the easy hike along the paved trail gives outdoor enthusiasts an opportunity to view the natural beauty of the park from the geology and varied ecosystems to winter birds and wildlife. Hikers could begin the self-guided tour at either the Nature Center or Anticline Pond. Educational information about the park and native wildlife was available at designated stops on the hike. Cesar said she anticipated at least 60 to 80 people to participate in the hike during the three-hour designated period. Friday’s hike, under a cloudless sky and cool temperatures, marked the second time the Perry family started the new year with the outdoor excursion. Chris McLean | Special to The View
