Kevin Verna takes a lot of pride in his work.

After all, pride is in the name.

Verna is the owner of American Pride Landscape Company in Pueblo West, which has deep roots in the Pueblo West community.

Verna’s father, John, was one of the first in Pueblo West back in the 1960s — vastly different than today’s community.

He opened Big John’s World of Stone, Stoves and Landscaping and was the first in the state to use stone in pioneering new landscape styles.

“People thought my father was nuts!” Kevin Verna said.

“But my dad had a vision. He brought crushed stone to Colorado.”

Verna has followed in his father’s footsteps and has been involved in landscaping for most of his life.

He has a vision and a passion for helping people create beauty on their property.

“I don’t just throw some rock in your yard and call it good,” he said.

He talked about all the different options that xeriscaping a yard might include, like different sizes and colors of rocks, heights, cultured stone, landscape lighting, retaining walls and more.

People who work with Verna will find him at the home, listening to a family’s wants and needs and then offering in his keen eye for details and ideas.

The result is happy customers and a beautiful yard.

“I’m an order maker – I listen to you and combine it with my ideas for something great. I want to put together something with the homeowner, and have them be very involved.

“My father taught me to take care of customers, and if you do, the work will come to you.”

Verna has owned and operated American Pride Landscape Company for several years, but moved to Pueblo West last November when his father offered a portion of his property located alongside Highway 50 east of Safeway.

“It’s such a great location!” Verna said.

“We’re going to do a big landscape out front that everyone will see when they drive by.”

And although many people think of landscaping as being a spring and summertime-type project, Verna said there is a lot that can be done during the fall and winter months.

In fact, since there’s often mild weather here, Verna said the winter is a great time to do a lot of landscape activity so the home is ready to go when the weather warms up.

American Pride Landscape offers a wide variety of services from all types of landscaping to irrigation, sod, brush trimming, fencing, custom decks, replacement of window wells, hardscaping (outdoor living areas) and more.

Verna employs 12 people full-time, and more than 20 during the busy summer months.

He said working on people’s projects during the cooler months is a win-win because it keeps his workers busy but can potentially include savings for the homeowner, as well.

“I love Pueblo West,” Verna said.

“And because I’ve been working out here many years, I know what works really well here too – what kinds of plants will live in this climate and what works best. I have a passion and love my job.”
