Tech Tip: Take stock smartly

With the holiday season firmly in the rearview mirror, now is the ideal time to make a log of your new belongings.

The reason is for insurance claims.

Should you lose your house in a fire or lose your newly acquired electronics and valuables in a burglary, you’re going to need proof of ownership when you file an insurance claim.

There are a few online methods and apps to help you document your belongings, but the easiest method is probably in your hand right now — your smartphone.

Don’t snap a pic of everything you own. Instead, go around your house with the items in plain site and record a video of them.

The video does two things.

First, it’s easier to manage one video file than it is to manage hundreds of photos or a paper list. Second, the video proves you actually owned the items.

Once the video is done, upload it to Dropbox or a similar service. The last thing you want is to have the video on your phone and lose it. Storing it in the cloud makes it available from any device.

Of course, it’s a good idea to check with your insurance company to ensure you’re meeting their individual requirements.
