Beautiful spring kicking off summer

What a great start for the spring.

With all of the rain that we have experienced in the last month things are definitely greening up and in full bloom.

In my seven years in Pueblo West, I have never seen so many different wildflowers in bloom. Another great reason to live in Pueblo West.

The road crews have been working diligently on trying to get Platteville Boulevard prepared for the chip seal program but unfortunately, the rains that have made everything green and colorful set them back another week.

Hopefully, if it dries up, those who live on the far north part of the metro district will be able to travel on a chip-sealed road to Purcell or destinations in between.

The new Fire Station 3 on the North side of Pueblo West is in final design and should be put out to bid this week or next.

It is anticipated that a proposed contract will go to the board of directors in July.

Additionally, the sewer line to serve the new fire station and Tracts 234 and 235 is at the 90 percent design stage and is scheduled for going to bid in late June, with a bid opening date of July 24.

This project consists of approximately 20,000 lineal feet of sewer pipe ranging in size from 8 inches to 21 inches. The new line will run from just south of U.S. 50 near the wastewater treatment plant northerly to Purcell Boulevard and Gold Avenue.

The construction will take place in metro district-owned parcels or rights-of-way along roads. If you have any questions regarding this project please contact Steve Harrison, director of utilities, at 547-5044.

I received a complaint recently from a resident who was expressing her concern with increased off-road vehicle traffic on easements and parcels owned by the metro district. It is illegal to do that and after discussions with the Sheriff’s Department, deputies have been instructed to contact anyone seen riding in easements and put their names in a database after advising them it is illegal to drive on the property.

Should they be stopped again, they will be issued a summons to appear in court. So please, if you have an off-road vehicle, take it to PMI or somewhere else where the use is allowed.

Memorial Day has passed and the next holiday is Independence Day. Just a reminder that the July Fourth festivities are getting organized.

The Pueblo West Chamber of Commerce will be hold its annual street dance on Friday, June 29 at the cul-de-sac bulb of Civic Center Drive just north of the Sheriff substation on Joe Martinez Boulevard.

Look for additional information in The View in coming weeks.

The Parade is on for July Fourth, starting at 10 a.m. sharp. After discussions regarding the liability to the metro district and the Chamber of Commerce because of individuals who have been throwing frozen water balloons, this year’s parade will be dry again.

The metro district and the chamber will be discussing ways to possibly minimize their exposure to the liability issues over the coming year and could possibly reconsider a wet parade in 2008.

The arts and crafts, food vendors, and entertainment will return as in the past so come take part of the celebration on July 4th at Lovell Park.

Pueblo West’s finest firefighters will once again take care of the honors for organizing and firing of the fireworks. They will take place after sunset on the 4th of July.

If you would like to contribute to the fireworks funds, please send your donations to either the metro district or the Pueblo West Chamber.

For information on the street dance, the parade or the activities at Lovell Park, please contact the Pueblo West Chamber of Commerce at 647-9086.

I would like to extend special congratulations to Don Bendell of Bendell Karate of Pueblo West.

This past month Don had the distinct privilege to attend his son’s graduation from Special Forces training, earning the Green Beret.

What really makes this special is that Don is a veteran who served in the Green Berets Special Forces in Vietnam and he has another son who also a Green Beret and has faithfully served his country in the current conflicts overseas.

It is not very often that you find a father and two sons who meet the high standards of the Green Berets. Congratulations Don. I know it was a very special moment for you and your family.

Until next month

Don Saling is manager of the Pueblo West Metropolitan District. He can be reached by e-mail at dsaling@pwmd-co.us or by phone at 547-2000.
