Pigskin Classic is here
The 14th annual Pigskin Classic between Pueblo West and Pueblo County is slated at 7 p.m. Friday at Dutch Clark Stadium.
The annual District 70 rivalry, which began in 2000, was the brainchild of the two schools’ athletic directors, Tony Ribaudo and Cherie Toussaint, and principals, Ruth Tarvella and Chris Gramstroff.
The Cyclones currently hold a 7-6 advantage in the series, and have won the last five in a row.
County’s last victory in the Pigskin Classic came in 2007 — the year that West won the state championship.
Students and staff at both schools look forward to celebrating the tradition of “Pigskin Week.”
The week-long festivities at West include hall decorating contests, dress-up day, a powder-puff football game, an all-school assembly and the traditional “Pigskin Pummel” pre-game celebration.
The majority of the Pigskin Classic games have been played at larger venues (Dutch Clark or CSU-P), to accommodate the large crowds. But the renovations and expansions of both stadiums will allow the schools to host these games starting next year.
