Foreign exchange student arrives for Pueblo West

Pueblo West foreign exchange student and soccer player Atem Nileng-Asong said he learned his fancy footwork with a soccer ball in his homeland, the West African country of Cameroon.

The speedy junior used those skills Tuesday, scoring two goals in a win over South-Central League foe South.

The Cyclones dumped the Colts 5-1 at Dutch Clark Stadium before a raucous crowd.

“I appreciate the quality of the game and the fair play of the teams in the league,” Nileng-Asong said in slightly broken English.

“Everybody in my country, the young boys, play football in my country.”

After missing a wide open shot earlier in the contest, Nileng-Asong found the back of the net for the second Pueblo West score. With a swift move to get behind two defenders, the young forward slipped the ball past South goalkeeper Randy Romero to go up 2-0 with 21 minutes left in the first half.

In the second half, Nileng-Asong scored again with 5:24 remaining in the match.

“It’s wonderful here. It’s a lot of fun, the coach is superb and the team is fantastic,” he said after the game.

West began the first half by attacking early.

West senior Jake Baxter scored the first goal off a header following a corner kick with 25:32 left in the first half.

West (4-2 overall, 3-0 in league) continued to threaten throughout the first half. The Colts are 4-1 overall, 3-1 in league.

Junior forward Jaydon Moreschini scored West’s third goal with 2:21 left in the half.

South’s Jacob Cody scored his team’s only goal with 29:01 left in the game.

Moreschini shut down the Colts’ late attack by delivering his second goal with 16:25 left in the game.

“It’s always big to win a league game,” West coach Rex Harriman said.

Moreschini said his team spread the ball around and found the seams.

“It was important to get a league win. It was a big win over a team that has been doing well all season,” Moreschini said.
