VFW scholarship competitions announced

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5812 is sponsoring two writing competitions for students, a creative Patriotic Arts competition and an opportunity to honor teachers.

Students begin by competing at the local post and Auxiliary level. Winners at the local level advance to the district level.

District winners will advance to compete in the state competition, and finally state winners advance to national competition.

“Patriot’s Pen” is open to students in grades 6 to 8. The VFW’s Commander-in-Chief annually chooses the year’s theme.

The 2013-14 theme is “What Patriotism Means to Me.”

The contest consists of four levels: local, regional, state and national.

The national first place award is currently $5,000 and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the winner and a parent or guardian.

“Voice of Democracy,” the VFW’s premier scholarship, is open to students in grades 9 to 12. Students compete by writing and recording a three to five minute broadcast script on an annual patriotic theme.

This year’s theme is “Why I’m Optimistic About our nation’s Future.”

The top scholarship for this competition is $30,000.

The Creative Patriotic Art competition is open to all students in grades 9 to 12.

Each year, students are asked to express their patriotism through their artwork.

Contest prizes $500 to $10,000.

Deadline for this competition is March 31, 2014.

The competitions are open to the public, private and parochial students, as well as home-schooled students.

The VFW also honors teachers with the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher award.

This award is designed to recognize classroom teachers who promote citizenship education, stimulate an interest in America’s history, traditions, civic responsibility, flag etiquette and patriotism.

Three levels of recognition includes K-5, 6-8 and 9-12.

A $1,000 National award will be given to winning nominees and a $1,000 will all be given to winning teacher’s schools.

Entry forms for all competitions are available at VFW Post 5812, 127 E. Spaulding Ave., in Pueblo West.

The entries must be submitted back to the Post by Nov. 1.
