For more than 10 years, DECA officers from Pueblo West High School have participated in the local Relay for Life race to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
This year the group hopes to become a gold tier member – but they need the community’s help to raise the $5,000 needed.
Tony Linkowski, DECA supervisor at PWHS, said each year the DECA group has been the top or second best youth group in the local Relay for Life.
The students raise the money needed two ways, through a garage sale and a Kick Cancer Kickball Tournament held at the school.
“Our new officers are selected in mid-May and this is kind of their first right of passage to raise money for Relay for Life,” Linkowski said.
“Overall they want to hit that goal and raise $5,000 to be a gold team, and have only a couple of weeks to do it.”
The DECA garage sale will be Saturday, May 31, beginning at 8 a.m. at the school parking lot.
Everyone is invited to come make purchases or simply make a donation to the team.
Linkowski said they are also happy to receive donations for the sale.
People can drop off items – marked for DECA – during school hours, can contact Linkowski at firstname.lastname@example.org or can simply bring them before the sale starts.
“Most of the teams in Relay for Life have been collecting money for months, and it’s tough for our kids because they have such a short time. So any help from the community is appreciated!”
