Laura Mattoon, a longtime volunteer with the Impossible Players and the Pueblo Zoological Society, died Wednesday.
She was 83.
Mattoon was one of the founders of the Impossible Players community theater group. She served on the group’s board of directors multiple times and received its “Impy of the Year” award in 1977.
An animal lover, Mattoon became involved with the zoo society at its inception, which was in the ’70s.
She was involved in numerous zoo fundraisers and improvements, was a docent and was recently named a member emeritus.
In 1981, Mattoon was honored as a “Beautiful Puebloan” for her volunteer work with the zoo and Impossible Players.
Mattoon also was a member of the Junior League, served on the board of directors for the Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center and was heavily involved in its Own Your Own Art Show.
Mattoon is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Bill. She is survived by four children and eight grandchildren.
The funeral service is at 10 a.m. Sept. 21 at Ascension Episcopal Church, 420 W. 18th St.
Arrangements are through T.G. McCarthy Funeral Home.
