A sophomore at Swallows Charter Academy shadowed Pueblo’s State Senator, George Rivera, last month as part of the 15th annual Legislative Day at the Colorado State Capitol.
Legislative Day 2014 at the Capitol: Celebrating Excellence, sponsored by the Colorado Association for Gifted and Talented, gives participating students a chance to shadow a legislator or legislative aide for a day as the Colorado General Assembly pursues its governmental process.
Walker Perry from Swallows Charter Academy learned about the opportunity from his social studies teacher, Tori Carter, and applied to participate.
Approximately 250 eighth to 12th graders from throughout Colorado took part in the activities for Legislative Day.
“By attending, I had the privilege of shadowing a state legislator for the day to learn the inner workings of how the Capitol runs and to observe the daily tasks, duties and activities of the state legislators,” Perry said.
He said Rivera was “very hospitable and kind,” taking time to answer questions and getting to know Perry. He said the day was very enjoyable.
Perry accompanied Rivera to a Senate hearing, which covered a number of topics including Human Trafficking Awareness Day.
“After the Senate adjourned, the Senator and one of his aides showed me around the Capitol and provided some history on the building and what takes place where,” Perry said.
“I was also given the opportunity to participate in a mock committee meeting with Senator Rivera as well as other senators and their shadows, and this truly allowed me to view how a committee is run.”
Perry said throughout the day, Rivera and other legislators and staff showed off the inner workings of the legislative process and said everyone was “incredibly kind, hospitable and informative, and genuinely cared to assist me in getting the most out of my experience.”
He said he will definitely apply to participate again next year, calling Legislative Day an unforgettable experience.
