Lady Cylones start off the season undefeated

The Lady Cyclone varsity volleyball team was having a great start to their season until a couple of injuries slowed their roll.

However, head coach Casey King is not about to let these injuries get in the way of what his team had their sights set on for this season.

“We started off the season very well. We were 1 and 1 and undefeated in the league,” explained King. “Things were going great until two of our players got hurt.”

Allegra Shipley, a junior at Pueblo West High School, suffered a severely sprained ankle while Shayne Doughty, a senior, suffered a concussion during practice.

“Both girls are doing fine and are recovering great but those injuries occurred during a very detrimental time for us. We had a tournament days after both injuries and we ended up losing some of our games due to having lost two of our key players for a few days.”

Coach King said that although the team had to learn how to pull together without two of their best players for a few games, a few of his younger players stepped in and did very well and the team stayed strong.

“I think we still have a shot at winning the South Central league. It is very possible and we still have sights set on our number one goal which is to win the playoffs,” said King.

The varsity team is made up of only three seniors, seven juniors, two sophomores and one freshman.

“I cannot say enough good things about my team.

“They have really pulled together and have learned what it’s like to be not only a team but a great team.

“A few juniors have really stepped up to the plate, too, such as Allegra Shippy, Matti Dabovich and Sierra Kruse, and we have Jayde Vujcich and Courtney Ewing, who are also juniors, playing the back row,” King said.

“Also, freshman Taylor Hogan has transitioned very nicely onto the varsity team.

“All the girls have contributed to each of our wins and I couldn’t be more proud of how hard they are working together as a team.”

With only being halfway through the season, King and his team hope to bounce back from the few setbacks they have experienced in hopes to making it to regionals and state finals.
