Karate promotions

Two Pueblo West residents earned black belts during last weekend's semi-annual testing by Bendell Karate at Florence Middle School.

Bendell instructor Amy Cullen was promoted to third-degree black belt, capping off years of study. She worked her way through college as an instructor and now is a law student and intern at the Pueblo County District Attorney's Office.

Norman Megilligan, 14, was promoted to second degree black belt. He ran three miles a day and lifted weights to train for the test.

Aside from tests in the basics - fighting single and multiple opponents, grappling, board-breaking, one-step sparring, forms, weapons and musical forms - candidates were required to perform community service and write essays about becoming black belts.

There were eight candidates, and one other who passed and won promotion.
