Eight PWHS students named to CSU-P Leadership Class
Seven Pueblo West High School students are among 17 incoming freshman from Southern Colorado who have been named to the Presidents Leadership Program (PLP) at Colorado State University-Pueblo.
The students were selected by a committee of campus and community board members and students from this year's PLP program. PLP students receive $2,000 per year for up to four years and earn a minor in leadership studies.
Eligible candidates are graduating high school seniors who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher and who display leadership potential, intellectual curiosity, and a commitment to something outside ones self.
PLP challenges participants to identify and engage in leadership issues facing Southern Colorado. Participants must retain no less than a 3.0 grade point average at CSU-Pueblo to maintain eligibility status.
The following PWHS students will be members of the 2008-09 PLP freshman class: Nichole Beaudin, Steven Cassidy, Kelsey Goettel, Justina Gonzalez, Nicole Kirby, Lindsay Reeves and Ashley Silva.Former PW resident completes Marine training Pfc. Luke Chambers has graduated from the recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego after 13 weeks of intensive training there and at Camp Pendleton.
Chambers was promoted to private-first class while in training. He also graduated from Marine Combat Training at Camp Pendleton, where he will remain until he completes training as an assault amphibious vehicle crewman and receives a permanent assignment. Bendell Karate names black belt winners Ashley Reichert, Ronald Atencio, Alexa Vik and Tyler Reichert recently earned black belts from Bendell Karate.
The honors were bestowed after completing 25 hours of community service, writing an essay on being a black belt, being model students at school and performing numerous basic techniques, forms, one-step sparring, sparring single and multiple opponents, grappling, and breaking a variety of boards with kicks and hand techniques. PWE names April students of the month The following youngsters were named April students of the month at Pueblo West Elementary School.
Third grade: Ian Garcia , Jordan Sanchez, Shaleena Lontine, Olivia Lopez and Marguerite Miller.
Fourth grade: Brainne Hasenack, Ray Warren, Chaitlynn Leo, Albrto Nunez and Michael Speakman.
Fifth grade: Andrew Borrego, Craig Francies, Shanya Atkins and Javier Garcia.
Andrew Borrego also was named that Power Credit Union student of the month and received a savings certificate.
