Tidbits of Pueblo West history and other interesting items and information, all at least 20 years old, will be revealed when the Pueblo West time capsule is opened on July 4.
The Pueblo West History Association will open the time capsule, which has been sealed for 20 years, after the July 4 parade. The capsule was created a few decades ago and last opened in 1989.
Originally intended to be opened every 10 years ago, its opening in 1999 was overlooked because some Pueblo West residents said there was a lot of turmoil and things going on within the Metro District.
It got a little crazy and nobody thought to open it, said Susie Morgan, who served as administrative assistant at the District for many years. So now its been 20 years and its about time to open it!
The time capsule is a wooden box with a little bitty key that was first created 30 years ago to celebrate Pueblo Wests 10th anniversary. Morgan said she doesnt recall exactly what was placed in the capsule 20 years ago, but thinks there are newspaper articles and perhaps a baseball cap, among other things.
Jock Peters of the Pueblo West History Association said he thinks it will be interesting to open the capsule and says its important to keep it going.
Thats why he and other PWHA members are soliciting new things to put into the capsule that will be added and resealed this fall.
At the groups booth following the parade there will be submission suggestion forms available. The forms can be dropped off at the Pueblo West View or the Pueblo West Library. Ideas can also be submitted via email to pwtimecapsule2009@mho.com.
A committee will screen the suggestions we get and then will notify people whether their suggestions are appropriate for inclusion, Peters said.
He noted that anything perishable is obviously not suitable for the time capsule, since it will be sealed for another 10 years to be opened on Pueblo Wests 50th anniversary.
I think its pretty exciting to open it again, said Morgan.
After the July 4 celebration, the items from the time capsule will be displayed at the Pueblo West Library.
