PWHS launches hall of fame
Many students, athletes, teachers and community members have made significant impacts at Pueblo West High School. Now they will have a permanent place to be honored within the school, in the new hall of fame.
Nominations are currently being taken for the inaugural class of the Pueblo West High School Hall of Fame. Selections will be made this spring, and officially inducted into the Hall during Homecoming Week in the fall, and annually thereafter.
“We’re young enough that it’s a good time to start a Hall,” said PWHS Athletic Director Jamie Wagner, “ But we definitely have some history. We have a lot of great things that go on in this building, and this is a great way to honor those people.”
After the new administration offices are constructed at the school this spring/summer, the Hall of Fame will be located approximately where Principal Martha Nogare’s office currently is. Plaques will include a picture of each inductee and his or her qualifications.
Wagner said with all the construction and remodeling going on at PWHS, it seemed like the perfect time to start the Hall of Fame, an idea that’s been tossed around for a couple of years.
The Hall of Fame at PWHS will include three categories — Alumni, both staff member (individual or group) and student (individual or group); Service (individual or group); and Athletics, either staff or students (individual or group). Wagner said the decision was made to include all aspects of PWHS, from academics to athletics, staff to outside contributors.
“It makes alumni feel attached to the school, and it’s a way to recognize all the great things we have going on around here.”
Anyone can nominate someone for the Hall of Fame by filling out the form (available online or at the school), and nominations are due by April 1. A selection committee will be comprised of administration members, head sports coaches, staff members, community members, a current student and past Hall of Fame members who request participation.
The PWHS Hall of Fame will be determined on a basis beyond meeting requirements, and selectors and nominators should “seek evidence of selfless contributions and/or a role in the betterment of a facet of the Pueblo West High School culture, spirit, traditions, stature and/or prestige,” as outlined in the school’s Hall of Fame criteria.
Pueblo West High School opened in 1997. Wagner said he is excited to see what types of nominees its first 16 years bring for the inaugural class.
