District 70 bans electronic smoking devices

Electronic cigarettes and similar devices now are prohibited in Pueblo County District 70.

The school board voted Tuesday to add a section to the use of tobacco by student policy banning the popular e-cigs.

E-cigs are battery-powered devices that emit vaporized nicotine or other non-nicotine vaporized solutions that are inhaled.

The policy change also prohibits the use of electronic cigars, cigarillo or pipes.

District leaders said requests by principals is what led them to add e-cigs as a banned substance.

Students caught with electronic cigarettes or similar devices will face the same consequences as those who are caught with tobacco products.

In other items Tuesday, the board approved contracts with two local construction companies for bond projects at two high schools.

Bassett Construction was awarded a $4.5 million contract for work at Rye High School.

The work will include a secured entrance, a new agricultural education and construction trades shop area, a career and technical education center, renovation of the culinary arts department and an addition to the auxiliary gym.

Houston Construction was awarded the bid for work at Pueblo West High School, which includes the addition of a performing arts department including classrooms and an auditorium.

The project also includes a 10-classroom addition, a secured entrance and a construction trades shop facility.

Houston’s contract is for $15 million.
