Westcliffe woman earns TOPS royalty
Sometimes, it’s hard to lose things.
Especially when it comes to losing weight.
But for Westcliffe resident Pat Meissner, losing weight was a big deal.
Meissner was announced the 2013 Colorado Queen by TOPS Club, Inc., a nonprofit weight-loss support organization, who unveiled its royalty on June 21 in Fort Collins.
Meissner lost 57.25 pounds.
LeRu “Lee” Brewer of Canon City, was announced the 2013 Colorado King. Brewer lost $41.5 pounds.
TOPS royalty are men and women who, at the end of the year, have officially recorded the largest weight loss from their starting weight, regardless of the time taken to reach their goal. Meissner and Brewer are just two of the more than 1,500 members in the state who lost over 8,500 pounds combined last year.
“I had always been a small size until my first child was born,” Meissner said.
“But I couldn’t seem to lose the baby weight. I was upset with myself and tried all kinds of diets, but nothing worked.
“A close friend of the family suggested I try TOPS. I called and found a chapter in Grass Valley, Calif.
“I also began to walk three miles a day, six days a week. I eventually lost 57.5 pounds.
“Soon after, we decided to move to Colorado and build our dream home. I thought I could keep the weight off without help and did not try to find a TOPS chapter. This was a bad decision, because I put back on twenty pounds in a few months.
“I decided to give TOPS another try,” she added.
“I’ve been the ‘walking coach’ for our chapter for several years. I also follow the food exchange system recommended by TOPS on a daily basis. The other members of my chapter are wonderful, and I get nothing but love and support from them.”
Consistent group support, health education, and recognition are all key components to successful weight management.
“We are so proud of our TOPS members’ amazing weight-loss successes,” Barbara Cady, TOPS president, said in a news release. “Members like Pat and Lee lost more than 400 tons combined in 2013 – a huge feat! Celebrating their life-changing accomplishments is an important part of TOPS’ winning formula, whether losing weight or maintaining goals.”
