Driver seriously hurt in crash with school bus in Pueblo West
A 26-year-old man was seriously injured Monday morning after he drove his truck into the rear of a school bus on Purcell Boulevard.
According to Pueblo County sheriff’s Capt. David Lucero, John Adams was driving north on Purcell at about 7 a.m. when he apparently was blinded by the sun and did not see the First Student school bus that had slowed in front of him.
“Right now, we think the sun is a major factor. It was pretty bright out there and that stretch of the road is dangerous,” Lucero said.
The school bus did not have any students on board and the driver was not injured, according to Lucero.
Adams was airlifted to Parkview Medical Center with serious injuries. Two other passengers in the truck were transported to an unknown hospital in private vehicles, Lucero said.
The bus was en route to pick up Pueblo County District 70 students.
District 70 Superintendent Ed Smith said First Student dispatched another bus and students were transported to schools as scheduled.
Lucero said a portion of Purcell near Will Rogers was closed near the accident scene for a couple of hours while the accident was investigated.
