Soccer team captures seed in playoffs

The Cyclones boys soccer team captured a share of the South-Central League championship in dramatic fashion.

Going into the final conference game, the Cyclones were locked in a dead heat with Pueblo Centennial for the conference championship — and for the higher seed in the playoffs.

Coach Montez dug into the complicated tie-breaking criteria, and figured out that his team needed to score at least three goals, and shut out their final opponent (Pueblo East), to force a coin flip for the playoff seeding.

They Cyclones beat Pueblo East 4-0, and the nearly unthinkable scenario had become a reality.

The athletic directors from the two schools met to call a coin flip to determine which team would be seeded in playoff slot that was slated for the SCL champion.

The Cyclones lost the coin flip.

But they did win a respectable 15th seed in the 32-team state playoff bracket.

West also earned the right to host the first round game against No. 18 Skyline Wednesday — too late to be reported in this edition of The View.

The winner of the first round game will play either Broomfield or Widefield in the second round.
