Girls basketball team in midst of solid season
Although Pueblo West High School varsity girls basketball team lost one out of their three games last week, that doesn’t mean they are standing down.
The team is stronger than ever and they are not going to let one loss slow them down. With an already very successful season underway, head Coach Gil Lucero is extremely proud of his team and hopes that they can continue in the right direction the remainder of the season.
Valor Christian vs. PWHS final score 63-48
“The game against Valor Christian started out well and at one point in the first quarter the score was 12-6. Valor ended up calling a timeout and went on a 9-0 run. Despite Haley Simental’s 28 points, the duo of Kendall Bradbury and Caroline Bryan was too much as they scored 44 of Valor’s 63 points,” Lucero said.
Pueblo West 60, P.County 51
“We were down 9-7 at the end of the 1st quarter but our defensive intensity and pressure picked up. We were much more balanced the remaining three quarters and scored 19, 18, and 16. Bri Rodriguez and Haley Simental each scored 19 points and Shyanne DeVille had a double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.”
Pueblo West 35, Air Academy 23
“The game against Air Academy was a very defensive minded game. Both teams had game plans of stopping each other’s leading score. West held Kasidy Huffman to 1 field goal and only 7 points well below her season average. Air Academy held Haley Simental to 10 points but also allowed Bri Rodriguez to score 10 of her own,” Coach Lucero explained.
The Cyclones faced a major test on Tuesday night, playing host to defending state champion South. South’s remains highly ranked and that should add to the already longstanding rivalry.
