Pueblo West boys’ varsity swimming team is off to a smooth start in the 2014 season and hopes to keep the momentum throughout the remainder of the year.

The boys swam against Centennial and won 133-50 on April 1.

They swam away with the victory, placing in 11 of 12 events.

Then, that following weekend, the boys traveled to the Cheyenne Mountain Invite where they finished 11th out of 20 teams.

Returning swimmer Devin Trujillo was the star of the week, placing second in the 100 butterfly and fifth in the 100 breaststroke. Trujillo also anchored a relay with Garret Lopez, Austin Lenning and Andrew Maal that placed ninth with a state qualifying time of 3:45.96.

Head coach Andrew Halvorson set goals for his team for those two meets and those goals were easily achieved.

“Our goal for the Cheyenne Mountain invite was to qualify our relays for state and we achieved that.

“Another goal was to see how Devin would swim against the types of swimmers he would face at the state meet and Devin’s performances were strong and we are confident that he will continue his performance into the last meet of the season,” Halvorson said.

The Pueblo West boys’ varsity swim team is currently ranked 1-1-1 and their next dual meet was Tuesday against Pueblo Central, too late to be reported in this week’s View.

The boys will then travel to the Red Wave Invite on the Friday and Saturday, which will be held at Pueblo Centennial.

“Our goal for this week is to give our team invite experience.

“With fewer teams and the Red Wave Invite, most of the team should get to swim boy days of the meet,” Halvorson said.
