Colorado Wakesurf Open comes to Lake Pueblo
Inaugural competition begins at 9 a.m. Saturday
For some, Lake Pueblo might feel like an ocean.
But it doesn’t take an ocean to create a wake.
Yet for those who have a passion for the ocean — and for surfing — then wakesurfing might bring those closer to home.
And for those with a passion for competition, the inaugural Colorado Wakesurf Open might be the place to test those skills.
The Colorado Wakesurf Open, sponsored by Rocky Mountain Boat Company, is sanctioned by Lake Pueblo state Park under a special activity agreement.
The open is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Boggs Creek Cove at the south boat ramp at Lake Pueblo State Park.
“This event is open to anyone who knows or has a passion for surfing,” said Nick Ohrdorf, wake division manager at Rocky Mountain Boat Company.
“Wakesurfing is one of the fastest growing boating sports, especially out here in the west,” Ohrdorf said. “And anybody can wakesurf; kids, moms, dad and even grandpa’s can do it because the water is smooth, and if they fall in it [then] it’s a soft landing, and you’re not going to get hurt.”
Wakesurfing is a water sport in which a surfer trails behind a wakeboard boat, surfing the boat’s wake without being directly attached to the boat. The wake from the boat mimics the look and feel of an actual ocean wave.
After getting up on the wave by use of a tow rope, wakesurfers drop the rope and ride the steep face below the wave’s peak in a fashion reminiscent of ocean surfing.
But it’s in a safe environment at Boggs Creek, Ohrdorf said.
“We really just want to bring this sport to the public because there are people who wakeboard and wakesurf daily, and we’re always amazed to hear how many people in town have never been to the reservoir, and it’s right in our own backyard,” Ohrdorf said.
Wakesurfers must run a course from one buoy to the next and are scored or judged based on the tricks in the water along the course, Ohrdorf said.
Prizes range from boards, ropes and “schwag” this year with the hopes that the open will draw professional surfers to future events.
Boggs Creek Cove at Lake Pueblo State Park will be closed to all general visitor boat traffic from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday for the inaugural Colorado Wakesurf Open.

The gravel parking lot at the south boat ramp, directly adjacent to Boggs Creek Cove, will also be closed to general visitor traffic for the event. However, plenty of alternative parking will be available in overflow lots at the south boat ramp.
